The Given Limb hopes to create a caregiver education program at Walter Reed for loved ones who are staying nearby or at Reed (e.g., at Fisher House). The program would initially include four modules: traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), wound care, and navigating the Veterans Administration (VA) health care system. The length of each session will be determined based on average length of stay of the caregivers (we are beginning to collect that data now).
A respected academic nursing program in the area would develop the curriculum and possibly help deliver the modules. We are also evaluating the possibility of a distance-learning program in which the nursing program would play a role as well. Contact us for more information about this caregiver education program at Walter Reed, or submit an idea about an initiative you think will improve the lives of amputees and veterans.
