There are approximately 20,000 lower limb amputees and 2000 upper limb amputees in Uganda. Approximately 20% of the lower limb amputees and almost none of the upper limb amputees have access to prosthetic services. The World Rehabilitation Fund has historically supported efforts to help lower extremity amputees, but there is still a great need for these services, and there has been no substantive effort to date for upper limb amputees. The Given Limb Foundation is considering alternatives and partnership opportunities for providing prosthetic services to upper extremity amputees in Uganda in the 2009-2010 timeframe.
